Fortunately, when it comes to keeping your heart healthy, there are easy ways to do so without adding any more stress to your life than necessary. Instead of worrying about everything extra you’ll need to do to keep your main organ functioning properly, try to include some simpler things in your everyday routines to ensure your heart beats the way that it should.
Do What You Love
Are you worried that you’re going to have to start skipping some of your favorite activities because your heart isn’t 17 anymore? This isn’t the case for many men. Continuing to indulge in hobbies that you enjoy can actually be beneficial for your cardiovascular health. If the boys invited you out to shoot hoops for a couple of hours, be sure to indulge in some physical play. Stress can have a huge impact on your body and can be one of the missed causes in heart disease, so doing things you love will help reduce stress and fight off any heart problems you may be fearing. Don’t hesitate to sit down and read a book, go out for a day of fishing, and even doing something hot and steamy, such as having sex more than twice a week.
Don’t Skip the Fats
When your doctor tells you that you should stop eating fattening foods, they are probably telling you something that you already know. As tempting as it is to order a greasy tray of fries with your burger and beer, trade them in for a side order of sweet potato fries. Unhealthy fats should only make up about 10 percent of your diet, so try to keep the healthy fats a priority when it comes to your meal plans.
Healthy fats are actually easier to include in your eating habits than you may think. Eating foods like fish twice a week can help lower blood pressure, as well as tuna, which can actually strengthen the heart muscle. If fish isn’t an enjoyable option for you, you can always add a fish oil supplement to your morning vitamin regimen. After the gym, you can snack on things like eggs or walnuts, which are also made up of beneficial omega-3 fats.
Don’t Stress About Exercise
If you don’t already hit the gym, it can be hard enough to add an exercise routine to your busy day before or after a busy day at the office. Instead of worrying about breaking your back at the gym, doing little things such as avoiding elevators or parking farther away than usual can help you add more steps to your day.
Exercise is a forgotten weapon when it comes to fighting off heart disease. The simple act can reduce stress and release endorphins, which fight off depression. Something as small as adding a punching bag to your man-cave can even keep your heart healthy, as some studies have shown men with reduced anger are less likely to develop heart problems.
It’s easy to get caught up worrying about your beer belly or how you’re going to lose the 20 pounds you’ve gained since you were the star football player, but don’t forget about the things that matter the most. Starting with your heart can help everything else fall into place.
